Course Description

The training of project leaders in construction is critical to getting jobs built on time and within budget while maintaining client relationships for the long term. The Field Leader Program (formerly known as Project Leadership Development) was developed to address the specific needs of the project’s staff who have greatest impact on success.

INstructor: Randy Nemchin

With more than 20 years of experience in training, Randy Nemchin works in all construction sectors to improve company, team, and individual performance. Randy draws on his experience as a certified instructor in developing leaders for the U.S. Air Force and holds workforce development degrees from Southern Illinois University (Bachelor’s) and Ottawa University (Master’s.)

Course Details + Curriculum

Course Objective

The primary objective is to teach leadership, communication and project management skills in a way that will keep projects moving and build bridges with field staff. Through a combination of education, hands-on workshops and self-analysis, this six-module program will help your project leaders improve their effectiveness both by showing them how to run projects more effectively and by providing them with the tools they need to improve their abilities.

This program is intended for those in field leadership positions or individuals who are transitioning to office roles, including assistant project managers, project managers, estimators, etc.

Module 1: Managing in Today’s World

To kick off the series, we will focus on the important management skills in the construction industry. We will also discuss how this relates to people and cover the different kinds of people on your team.

Module 2: Better Communication I

Poor communication in construction costs far more money than we realize. In this session, we will learn how to tell people what you want in a more effective manner.

Module 3: Effective Teams

We work in an industry that functions in teams. Learning how to build and maintain a better team will be the focus of this session together.

Module 4: Raising Productivity

As schedules tighten and margins thin, productivity is critical. Learn what a difference you can make with small changes in the way you do work.

Module 5: Dealing with Conflict and Change

When you have people working together on a project, you are certain to have conflict. In this session, we help you discover your conflict style and learn effective ways to handle conflict.

Module 6: Leading the Client

Managing clients is a part of business. Learn in this final session how you can engage clients well and make them come back for more.
